One of the benefits of socially distanced theater is that it offers potentially more intimate experiences through technology. In particular, autonomous sensory meridian response—or, ASMR—is one sound design technique that could be utilized to create an immersive atmosphere. In Laurence Scott’s Wired article, he notes that “ASMR experiences” offer an “inverse image of digital culture,” as it is quiet and meant to soothe. The hyperfocus on specific sounds and their intended effect on the listener may prove to be an effective way to invoke a bodily response and involve an audience in a performance. Thousands of ASMR videos can be found on Youtube, including this one, which features a person planting flowers.
